A Matter of Choice – The new 2018 Porsche 911 GT3

Over the years Porsche has faced both criticism and applause regarding the legendary 911. Naysayers have bashed the German automaker for being lazy and not redesigning the 911 over the years, however Porsche have stayed strong and have been able to continue to perfect the 911 to an iconic supercar.

The 911 has an extremely versatile lineup, the car is offered is in 21 different variants, ranging from the entry level Carrera to the maxed out Turbo S. The latest edition is the 2018 GT3 which was recently launched at the Geneva Motorshow in Switzerland. This car is Porsche’s attempt of creating the ultimate street legal sports car, providing the perfect blend of performance orientation with the comforts of everyday drive-ability. The car will be produced in Weissach and will be manufactured on the same assembly line as the 911, 911 Street and 911 GT3 Cup racecars.

The new redesigned GT3 has a new naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine which produces 500 hp and 339 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is the same as the ones that are used in the 911 GT3 R and 911 RSR, Porsche’s motorsport racecars. The power unit is mated to a specially designed PDK seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard however Porsche has allowed users to opt for a 6-speed manual and a clutch. Performance is quicker with the automatic with the 0-60 mph marker being completed in just 3.2 seconds whereas the manual will complete the target in 3.8 seconds. Top speeds are also different depending on gearbox choice as well, the automatic will be slightly slower due to the heavier weight but the difference is negligible.

The chassis of the GT3 has also been redesigned and tuned to improve cornering speeds and overall handling. The GT3 now features an Active Rear Axle Steering, this allows the rear wheels to turn either in the direction of the front wheels or in the opposite manner depending on the speed of the car providing a more articulate steering response. The dynamic engine mounts and the rear locking differential, both fitted as standard, also boost the car’s driving dynamics.

The exterior aesthetics of the car have also been updated. There has been more sculpturing for better airflow over the car improving downforce. The rear diffuser has also been tweaked to provide higher aerodynamic efficiency.

The interior of the GT3 has been set up for total focus towards the driver while providing an enthralling new driving experience. The steering wheel has been brought over from the 918 Spyder and the Sports Seats Plus also feature multiple levels of adjustment and customization to set a perfect driving position without the compromise of lateral support and comfort. There are two other seat options available for the 911 GT3. The Adaptive Sport Seats Plus offer an 18-way electric adjustment along with a power steering column and seat memory. Alternatively, Full Bucket Seats with electric height adjustment and a fixed carbon fiber reinforced backrest are also available.

Porsche has also added its track telemetry application into the Porsche Communication Management system along with other amenities such as navigation and Apple Car Play. The Porsche Track Precision application can be downloaded onto the drivers smartphone and data regarding lap times and other track orientated information on their mobile device.

The 2018 Porsche GT3 will start at  $143,600 and orders will begin in the Fall of 2017.
