All Out Assault on Your Senses; Which Hypercar is Setting The New Standard
The term of “supercar” has devolved in the modern era. Technology regarding the automotive industry has accelerated at a such a rate that a new category had to be developed to keep pace. The introduction of the “Hypercar”. This new breed of car is deemed only for those vehicles whose performance figures are unfathomable to most human beings. They’re sole existence is break barriers that were once thought unattainable and getting into this club doesn’t come easy. Lets introduce some of the members of this elite club.
Bugatti is probably the epitome of what a hypercar should be, the personification of exactly what millions of dollars gets you in a vehicle. It made its mark with the Veyron a few years ago breaking the record for fastest production car in the world, and subsequently starting a race with many other manufacturers to keep up. The Veyron was something special, the perfect blend of unmatched luxury with speed, but the new Chiron is even better. The Chiron wants to carry on where the Veyron left off, and is poised to becoming the fastest road legal production car in the world. It has a rocketship of an engine, a Quad-turbocharged W16 that produces an astounding 1,500 horsepower with 1,180 lb-ft of torque. Performance figures for the Chiron are quoted at 2.3 seconds for the 0-60 mph and a top speed of 271 mph. The Chiron is the intercontinental blaster for the super-rich. Base price starts at $2.7 million.
This Swedish manufacturer doesn’t have the deep pockets that Bugatti has for developing its R&D but that didn’t stop them from giving them the most difficult competition they have. The One:1 is a special version of the Agera that Koenigsegg manufactures and is special because it has the holy grail of automotive engineering, the perfect power to weight ratio, 1kg to 1 hp. The importance of a figure like this means that the total weight of the car is being compensated by the engine and there is no extra load that it has propel. The One:1 is like a beast that is waiting to be untamed by the use of the throttle. It has a Twin-Turbocharged V8 that is producing a hefty 1,341 hp and pulling 1.152 lb-ft of torque. This allows the One:1 to jump from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and beating the Chiron with a top speed of 273 mph. The complex technology regarding the aerodynamics and traction control of the car make it a wonderment to engineering and a sight to behold.
Porsche 918 Spyder
Germans have had their eye on making something that will challenge the elites. Make no mistake Porsche makes some pretty fast “Supercars” such as the 911 Turbo S, but they still needed to make something special to enter the “Hypercar” club. Hence, they created one of the members of the Holy Trinity (Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 & Porsche 918 Spyder), the 918 Spyder. This creation is the proof that the automotive industry needed that hybrid technologies can be used for creating ultra-performance orientated cars. The attention to detail in the 918 is excellent, they have engineered a hypercar that can be used for everyday purposes and then when needed can be transformed into a monster for the racetrack. The car has been developed with the Carrera GT in mind, and certain similarities can be seen through the design elements, however where the Carrera GT might have been considered ‘slow’, the 918 makes up for. The power unit in the Porsche is 4.6-liter V8 mated with two permanent magnet AC synchronous electric motors, each of the units produce 608 hp, 127 hp & 154 hp respectively, totaling 887 hp and producing torque figures of 944 lb-ft. All of this means that 0-60 mph is dealt with in 2.6 seconds and a top speed is achieved at 211 mph. Base price for the 918 Spyder starts at $931,975.
Class and performance, words most commonly associated with prancing horse badge. Ferrari has been in the game of producing show stopping cars for a long time and has never ceased to amaze when it comes to producing their ultimate road cars. The LaFerrari is a key example of that. It comes through the succession of cars that include the legendary F-40, F-50, and the Enzo. Ferrari has developed something of utter beauty in this car. Its driving dynamic and its ability to just accelerate to great speeds is astonishing. Building on the 918 Spyder, this is another entrant in the Holy Trinity club of hypercars. It uses similar technology to the Porsche regarding the harmonization of Hybrid and Petrol Drive but is able to squeeze out even more horsepower. The LaFerrari has stuck with its roots of being a flagship car of the company and houses a 6.3-liter V12 which is paired with an electric motor which in combination produce nearly 950 horsepower and nearly 800 lb-ft of torque. Active aerodynamics play a key role for the LaFerrari since all the power goes towards to the rear wheels, the airflow design has been used to make sure the car stays as close to the road as possible. LaFerrari completes the 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 218 mph. Base price for the LaFerrari starts at $1.42 million.
The P1 is final member of the Holy Trinity club. It probably is the most driver focused of all the three. It also has the most to prove since its predecessor the McLaren F1 was the fastest car in the world for the better half of a decade until the Bugatti Veyron came to dethrone the old champion. The P1 was the first out of the three to hit the market and show the true potential of hybrid technology in hypercars. The P1 is proof of race-car having road car capabilities, it was built to destroy track times and it does actually that. It solely focuses on being a speed demon and providing the ultimate comparison that could be made with a Formula 1 car, it has the ultimate extreme speed experience. Complete carbon fiber construction, no nonsense interior, just the basics. McLaren wanted to come back with a bang and they did. The engine is a Twin Turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 that sends all the power to the rear wheels. This makes driving the P1 more challenging than the others but the car truly shines in the hands of an hardened veteran of the racetrack. The way this car gains speed is nothing short of spaceship comparison. Performance figures for the P1 are as follows, 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds and governs a top speed of 217 mph. Base Price for the McLaren starts at $1,150,000, however all units are sold out.
Its very difficult to compare hypercars against each other since they all serve a specific purpose of speed but tackle it very differently. They all command presence and respect but they all have their own personalities. If we were able to rate them on a scale it would have to be something really special. But if one is really persistent and feels numbers speak for themselves than the Koenigsegg One:1 seems to come out on top as being the ultimate hypercar of today, for now.
