Claasen Atalante: Old World Charm with High Technology

 

It is said that you can’t have something both ways. In a sailing yacht, however, you absolutely can, and the Claasen Atalante Truly Classic 127 offers proof. An idyllic blend of new and old, this cutter rigged sloop displays every gorgeous detail with regard to the excellent craftsmanship of the beautiful sailing yachts of the 1920s and 1930s, integrated with top-of-art technology.

Rich, highly polished woods, gleaming brightwork, and graceful lines of yesterday’s epic yachts are all brought to life in Atalante. Underneath that purely classic exterior beats the heart of a high tech performance yacht, pumping to the tune of a high modulus carbon carbon mast, continuous carbon rigging, ultramodern equipment, and state of the art technical systems.

Specifications

Launched in May of 2015, Atalante slipped into the water with the longest hull to date in the Truly Classic series at 127 ft/38.8 meters, with a 96.99 ft/27.96 m waterline, giving her distinct speed advantages. The high tensile aluminum longitudinal framing provides strength and stiffness that are instrumental to high performance. A deep draft keel and thin foil help to keep the competition interesting, aiding the cable-based direct steering system offering feedback at the wheel.

The air conditioned control room sports a smart layout for the sophisticated technical systems, making for easy operation and maintenance. A Scania main engine is fitted with a controllable pitch propeller. Alternate power is provided by two Northern Lights generators.

The combined efforts of Claasen Shipyards, Naval Architecture by Hoek Design, project management by Nigel Ingram of MCM, and interiors by Hamilton Weston have contributed to what Andre Hoek describes as “unrivalled value for the money,” adding that the Claasen craftsmanship has once again proven excellent in terms of materials, joinery, and finishing.

Two Sets of Cockpits and Deckhouses

Amidships on the teak laid deck, under the curved bimini, sits the commanding guest cockpit. The exquisitely detailed seating and gathering area is fitted with two built-in sofas surrounding the polished Mahogany adjustable height tables. Crisply tailored cushions, smartly set with red trim, compliment the highly polished Mahogany joinery and rails. All furnishings throughout the yacht come from the experienced hand of the UK’s Hamilton Weston, who worked with the owners on three previous projects.

Forward, a short stair leads to the enclosed guest deckhouse, stylishly outfitted in luxurious polished woods, crisply accented with white raised and fielded panels and tailored blue upholstery. The dining area features a large dining table to port with comfortable seating. A cabinet, housing an additional sliding table, also houses fine cutlery in custom dark blue velvet inserts, all supplied by Carrs of Sheffield, UK.

A private owner’s cockpit and deckhouse aft are the principal navigation areas, with a well-spaced and placed wheel, surrounded by similarly sumptuous woods, crisp white raised paneling, and perfect blue upholstery. Equipped with two screens, a pilot berth, refrigerator, and boiling water tap for coffee or tea make it fully functional. Connected to the master suite, the aft deckhouse is the perfect owner’s office while at anchor.

Sail Plan

A fully battened mainsail on a 158-foot/48-meter carbon mast posts an impressive profile. Fitted with 10,000 square feet of North 3Di sails, she has a boom length of 16.30 m, a mast height of 45.75 m, a luff length of 43.00 m, and a mast to headstay measurement of 14.40 m. When the winds allow, she flies her beautiful royal blue spinnaker with white logo to gain further speed advantages.

Owner’s and Guest Cabins

Echoing the deck layout, the owner’s cabin and saloon are placed well aft, giving them practically half of the boat to themselves, offering privacy both on deck and below. The full beam master is fitted with a vanity table and backlit mirror to starboard, and a posh sofa to port. Full length lockers accommodate more formal attire. The well-appointed bath and shower, separate from the toilet and bidet, are equally attended with the luxury touch.

Two guest cabins sit forward. A double berth with en suite bath, sofa, and storage to port, and a twin berth cabin with en suite bath to starboard, attend to comfort and need in similar fashion to the owner’s suite, completed with well executed joinery, furnishings, and artwork.

Full Beam Salon

Seating ten, the salon, bar, and bookcases all benefit from natural daylighting. A day head and control room are positioned between the salon and the engine room, buffering noise and maintaining controls in an air conditioned environment.

Galley and Crew Area

Forward of the mast, a galley equipped with hob and oven 30° gimbel to minimize spills, twin Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer units, and a relaxed crew mess to starboard create a highly productive, comfortable workspace.

A double captain’s cabin to port, with en suite head and shower, and monitoring screen for following onboard development offers peace and comfort. Crew quarters emphasize the owner’s wish to keep the crew happy.

Built as a family cruiser, Atalante’s versatility serves both racing and chartering well. The experienced owner expressed that the yacht performs even better than his highest expectations, feeling the build truly delivered on his wish to “spin the yacht on a sixpence,” without losing touch with the water.
