Preview Geneva International Motor Show

Its that time of the year again where one of the most coveted automotive exhibitions takes place, the Geneva International Motorshow has arrived. This is the perfect platform for automotive manufacturers to showcase new releases, concept vehicles and new automotive designs and technology. Its one of the biggest shows in the automotive calendar and everyone is here to impress. Here are few of the showstoppers that were present.

2018 Mercedes Benz E-Class Cabriolet

Mercedes Benz has been busy with revamping its cabriolet lineup and now the new E-Class has joined the ranks. The new cabriolet fits right between its brothers, the C-Class Cabriolet and the S-Class Cabriolet which allows Mercedes to complete the entire spectrum and enables customers to have a better choice when choosing cars. The new E-Class Cabriolet has been redesigned completely and shares little resemblance of the 7 year old previous generation model. Structural changes were made in order to maintain similar performance figures as the coupe. Styling is cued with the current E-Class generation which is absolutely sublime.

The automatically operated fabric roof of the new E-Class Cabriolet is similar in design to the closely related structures used by the smaller C-Class Cabriolet and larger S-Class Cabriolet. It comes in four colours: brown, blue, red and black.

The multi-layer roof, produced by Austrian engineering specialist Magna, can be opened and closed in 20 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h via a button within the centre console, stowing in a dedicated space underneath a tonneau cover at the rear of the cabin to preserve the new open top’s svelte lines. The new E-Class Cabriolet is a car to look out for.

Ferrari 812 Superfast

Ferrari has been known to surprise its fans at the Geneva Motorshow and this year was no different with the replacement for the F12 Berlinetta, the 812 Superfast. Officially this is the most powerful naturally aspirated V12 Ferrari has ever made, power figures for the 812 Superfast are 789 horsepower with 550 pound-feet or torque, similar to the LaFerrari hypercar. The 812 is expected to hit the 0-60 mph barrier at 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph. This power is translated through to the rear wheels via a 7-Speed Dual Clutch gearbox with customized ratios to maximize performance.

The 812 is one of the prettiest cars Ferrari has ever made, drawing styling cues from the 365 GTB4 from 1969. There has also been an introduction of active aerodynamics on the car, these include air flaps that alter themselves to help increase overall downforce on the car. The interior has also been updated now sporting a reshaped dash with new controls on the steering wheel.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

The Panamera has recently been re-styled to update itself to changing demands of the market, and Porsche have done an excellent job matching up to customer expectations. A new shape of the Panamera has been introduced in accordance to changing dynamics, the Sport Turismo which is the matrimony of a long wheel base sedan and a station wagon.

The new model rides on the same wheelbase as the fastback regular Panamera. It’s neither longer nor taller, but the roofline is elongated, providing additional rear-seat headroom and a slightly larger luggage compartment. The engines being used for the Sport Tursimo are similar to the regular models however all wheel drive is standard. The entry-level model will be the 330-hp Panamera 4, the 440-hp 4S is one step up, and there will be a Turbo model with 550 horsepower. A hybrid option also exists, the 462-hp Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo.

The introduction of this model helps Porsche increase its overall target market for the Panamera in a more conventional way by giving customers more space inside in the car without damaging looks or performance.

Lamborghini Aventador S

The Aventador was introduced in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show and has been one of Lamborghini’s best sellers. The Aventador was the replacement for the Murcielago. After the roadster and SV variants were released Lamborghini has now released the updated version of their flagship supercar, the Aventador S.

The S has seen some major updates regarding performance tuning and new features. The engine remains the same however after some tweaking of the valve timing and intake setup an extra 39 horsepower was extracted from the car for a total of 730. The most important feature however would be the 4-wheel steering functionality. This technology was already present in the SV however no it is available at a lower trim level. The suspension has also been modified for greater stability around corners. Another interesting bespoke feature that Lamborghini has added is the EGO Drive Mode. This mode enables the driver to customize the setup of their vehicle to suit personal choices so that they have a greater control over their car.

Revisions have also been made regarding the styling of the Aventador S. The front end features two new air ducts and a larger front splitter, while the rear has a new black diffuser and revised taillights. Lamborghini says that these changes result in a better aerodynamic profile with improved downforce at speed when the movable rear wing is in position.

The Aventador S is an excellent way to revamp the Lamborghini lineup without creating too much melodrama.
